Trail SL-02SB Cruz Grande - Cercados De Araña - Chira
This 6.4 km linear trail descends from Cruz Grande to the Chira reservoir, crossing the Parque Rural del Nublo in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The route sheet classifies it as low difficulty when descending, but warns that if you hike it in reverse —that is, climbing from Chira— the difficulty becomes moderate. The estimated hiking time is 2 hours and 3 minutes, and the elevation ranges from a maximum of 1,240 m down to a minimum of 901 m.
The surface is a stony and cobbled path, with no technical difficulty, intuitive and easy to follow. It runs partially through pine forest, where you'll enjoy shade, alongside junipers, rockroses, brooms, codesos and retamas. However, the area near the Chira reservoir is the most exposed to direct sun, and you should know that the final section runs on asphalt, specifically on the GC-604 road.
Important: the route sheet indicates that this paved section required a reflective vest for safe progression, so you should bring one to increase your visibility to traffic. There are no services along the way and no possibility to leave the trail until that final stretch on the GC-604.
During the hike you can enjoy impressive views towards the cliffs of Despeñaperros, located below the Llanos de Pargana plains, as well as the pine forest and the La Plata basin. Being a straightforward route —as long as you hike it downhill— it's considered a family-friendly trail suitable for beginners in mountain hiking.
Remember to plan your return transport or the logistics to retrieve your vehicle, as this is a linear route with no loop back along the same path.
