Trail S05 - Artenara - Galeotes - Fontanales - El Tablero - Valsendero

This 12.9 km linear trail connects Artenara with Valsendero via Galeotes, Fontanales and El Tablero, crossing the municipalities of Artenara, Gáldar, Moya and Firgas. With significant accumulated elevation gain—greater on descent—and elevations ranging from 788 to 1,354 metres, the route sheet classifies it as medium difficulty and estimates a time of 4 hours and 41 minutes.

Although without technical commitment and following well-marked paths, the route has deficient signage, which increases the risk of getting lost. However, since it runs through areas of scattered population and multiple communication routes, this risk is not considered serious. The greatest risk is being run over, as it covers numerous stretches of pavement and road accessible to vehicles; the route sheet states that you will need to carry reflective vests.

The trail runs mainly along rural paths through farmland, pine forests and scrubland areas of broom, gorse, rockrose, buckthorn and pomegranate trees, and even laurel forest, offering shaded areas along its route. Since it runs along numerous stretches accessible to vehicles, it is easy to withdraw or section the trail. You will find catering and accommodation services at the start and end points, as well as in Fontanales, where you also have a shaded picnic area. There are public transport stops nearby.

The route crosses protected areas of high scenic value: the Protected Landscape of Las Cumbres (C-25), the Natural Monument of Montañón Negro (C-15) and the Doramas Rural Park (C-12), with outstanding views of the northern island façade and the Tejeda Basin. The route starts in the municipality of Artenara and reaches the municipality of Firgas via Gáldar and Moya.

The route sheet notes that, by deviating slightly from the route, you can access the phreatomagmatic caldera of Pinos de Gáldar, which is worth visiting.
