Playa del Salto
Playa del Salto is a small stretch of black volcanic rock coastline located in Valverde, on the eastern side of El Hierro. You won't find sand here or a calm spot for swimming: the sea is usually rough, with currents that make entering the water unsafe. This is, above all, a place to watch the Atlantic waves crash against the lava and feel the ocean's raw power.
Access is straightforward, and from the shore you can follow a trail that crosses the malpaís, the island's characteristic solidified lava landscape. The path runs between black rock and the ocean, offering open views of the marine horizon. If you decide to walk it, keep in mind there's no shade: early morning or late afternoon are the most comfortable times.
This isn't a beach for sunbathing or swimming. It's a spot to contemplate El Hierro's volcanic coastline and, if you enjoy fishing from the rocks or simply watching the sea, you might find it worthwhile. Playa del Salto is a sample of the island's wilder shoreline.
