Barranco de las Peñitas

Outdoors / NatureProtected Areas

The Barranco de las Peñitas is a protected natural area within the Betancuria Rural Park, in the interior of Fuerteventura. Here you'll find a landscape very different from the island's coastal beaches and volcanic plains: a narrow ravine flanked by high cliffs, scattered palms and rock formations that give the area the appearance of a small oasis in the arid terrain.

The ravine extends from Betancuria to the headwaters of the Mal Paso ravine, although the section commonly known as «Las Peñitas» lies just beyond the dam built in the 1930s to collect rainwater. Over the years, sediment accumulated behind the dam has formed a green zone that contrasts with the surrounding rocky hills.

The trail running through the ravine includes several viewpoints and access to spots like the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña, a small white chapel nestled among the rocks, dedicated to the patron saint of Fuerteventura. Further along, you can reach the Arco de las Peñitas, a natural rock arch formed by erosion. The route includes sections with rocky steps and uneven terrain, so sturdy footwear and sufficient water are recommended.
