Barranco de Fataga
The Barranco de Fataga is one of the most distinctive natural features in southern Gran Canaria. This deep ravine cuts through the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, forming a natural corridor that descends from the inland mountains toward the coast. Its rugged terrain, shaped over millennia by water erosion, creates a landscape of steep slopes and narrow valley floors where numerous Canary palms grow, especially in the lower sections.
Along the ravine, you'll find sharp contrasts between the green areas of the valley and the bare volcanic rock formations of the surrounding mountains. The trail that runs through parts of its course crosses varied terrain, from stony stretches to sections with scrubland vegetation. At some points, you can see the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon, while at others the relief closes the view toward the interior peaks.
The Barranco de Fataga is part of a protected area and its natural character remains largely undisturbed. Its geology reveals layers of volcanic rock exposed by erosion, and the variety of flora adapted to the semi-arid climate includes endemic species typical of the island. It is a common destination for hiking routes of different levels, with trails varying in length and difficulty depending on the section chosen.
