Barranco de Guayadeque

Outdoors / NatureProtected Areas

The Barranco de Guayadeque is a deep ravine cutting through the municipalities of Agüimes and Ingenio in southeast Gran Canaria. You'll find here one of the island's most striking landscapes: vertical rock walls rising up to 600 metres, carved by millennia of erosion and covered with endemic vegetation in the most humid areas.

This ravine preserves natural caves inhabited since pre-Hispanic times, some still used today as dwellings or restaurants carved into the rock. Its most dramatic section follows the GC-103 road, which winds along the dry riverbed and offers views of the contrast between barren slopes and pockets where palm trees, dragon trees and junipers grow.

From several points along the ravine, trails climb up the walls and connect with neighbouring ravines or nearby summits. The geology of the site, with volcanic strata and ancient sediment deposits, makes Guayadeque a place of landscape, archaeological and botanical interest.
