Castillo de El Tostón

What to see and doIconic Buildings

The Castillo de El Tostón is a defensive fortification located in El Cotillo, within the municipality of La Oliva, very close to the beach. This small castle, also known as Torre de El Tostón, was built in the early 18th century to protect the northwest coast of Fuerteventura from pirate and corsair attacks.

The structure, with its circular layout and basalt stone walls, retains its original compact appearance. Inside you will find an exhibition space dedicated to the history of traditional fishing in the Canary Islands, with information panels and some related tools. From the castle's rooftop you have direct views of the ocean, the El Cotillo coastline and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Access to the site is free and you can visit it while walking around the harbor area. Its location by the shore makes it a reference point for learning about the island's defensive past and understanding the strategic importance of this coastal strip over the centuries.
