Playa del Azufre

BeachesOutdoors / Nature

Playa del Azufre is located in the municipality of Villa de Mazo, on the east coast of La Palma, and is a small volcanic sand beach that you can only reach on foot via a demanding mountain trail. Access begins alongside the road, where you'll find pull-offs to leave your car, and from there a path descends about 200 metres down a ravine to the shore.

The route requires sturdy footwear and a head for heights: the trail runs along narrow zigzag sections, with scrambling passages where you'll need to use your hands and a metal ladder anchored into the rock. The descent usually takes around half an hour, and the return climb is demanding. The beach itself is a narrow, secluded strip of dark gravel and sand, almost always deserted, facing the Atlantic Ocean and sheltered by the cliffs.
