Playa de la Arena
Playa de la Arena lies on the eastern coast of El Hierro, near Valverde, in a sheltered natural setting next to the island's Parador. Despite its name—arena means sand—you won't find fine sand here: the shoreline is made up of large volcanic rocks and pebbles that shape the rugged coastal landscape typical of this part of the island.
Access to the sea requires caution due to uneven terrain and a steep rocky slope leading down to the water. Waves can be strong, so it's worth checking conditions before going in. The beach receives morning sun, a relevant detail on an island where coastline orientation determines hours of direct light.
You can reach the spot from Valverde via the HI-2 road heading south, roughly a 35-minute drive. The area is quiet and rarely crowded, with no facilities or natural shade, so bring what you need if you plan to visit.
