Parroquia San Juan Bautista - Arucas

What to see and do Churches and Cathedrals

In the heart of Arucas, on Calle Párroco Cárdenes, stands the Parish of San Juan Bautista, locally known as the Cathedral of Arucas, although it is technically a parish church. Its neo-Gothic style inspired by Catalan Gothic and its construction entirely in blue stone from local quarries make it the city's most iconic architectural landmark.

Designed by the Catalan architect Manuel Vega y March, construction began in 1909 and continued for nearly 70 years, being inaugurated in 1977. The blue stone, hand-carved by local artisans, gives the building a unique identity on the island.

Inside you'll find valuable stained glass windows by Maumejean et Frères, a carved cedar altarpiece and the celebrated sculpture of the Recumbent Christ, work of the local artist Manuel Ramos González. Paintings by Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana complete a heritage of great historical value.
