Iglesia de Santa María de Betancuria

What to see and do Churches and Cathedrals

In the heart of Betancuria, the former capital of Fuerteventura, you'll find the Church of Santa María, a historic temple standing in Plaza Santa María de Betancuria. This religious building blends architectural elements from different periods: Gothic and Renaissance lines alongside Baroque touches and Mudéjar details that reflect successive transformations over the centuries.

The church features a simple white façade accompanied by a square bell tower. Inside, three naves are separated by stone pillars, and if you look up you can observe the wooden ceilings that preserve the traditional character of the temple. In 1424 it became the first cathedral in the Canary Islands, a fact that underlines its historical importance in the archipelago.

In 2019, the Government of the Canary Islands declared this site a Heritage of Cultural Interest, recognizing its patrimonial value. Access to the interior costs 2 euros. Betancuria retains a calm and well-kept layout that invites you to explore on foot, and the church stands as one of the main architectural landmarks of the municipality.
