In the western tip of El Hierro, near Frontera, you'll find El Sabinar, a forest of ancient savin junipers sculpted by the constant winds that batter this part of the island. These trees, with thick and sturdy trunks, bend dramatically until their branches dig into the ground to withstand the gusts, creating sculptural shapes that have become a symbol of El Hierro.

Access is via a track that crosses La Dehesa, a grazing area where goats, cows and sheep roam freely. You'll need to open and close a gate to keep the animals contained, and drive carefully in case you encounter livestock or hikers on the path. You can also reach it on foot from the Bascos viewpoint, less than a kilometre away.

The site is open 24 hours and forms part of a protected natural area located at around 700 metres altitude. The twisted shapes of the savin junipers allow you to imagine the harsh conditions faced by both these trees and the island's early inhabitants.
