Ángel Guimerá Theatre was built in 1849 and designed by architect Manuel de Oraá. It was constructed on the same site where the old Santo Domingo Convent was. His style is romantic classicist and was inaugurated in early 1851, pending a few final touches, such as the interior decoration that was performed in 1888 and other details to adjust the work to the Oraá design, details which were completed in 1908. This theatre has had many names, "El Teatro", " Teatro Isabel II " Teatro Municipal", "Teatro Principal", until 1923, the year in which the famous playwright from Tenerife, Ángel Guimerá, died, and it was decided to give his name to the Theatre to pay homage to the late artist. In the Teatro Guimerá the most famous actors and actresses have played, as well as music companies, orchestras, zarzuelas and ballets. It was also the principal place of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra until the construction of the Auditorium. El Teatro Guimerá is located in the Plaza Isla de Madeira, where also La Recova Art Centre and the Municipal School of Graphic Art are situated. This Theatre currently hosts theatre companies, concerts and similar events, even some performances related to Carnival such as Rondallas Festival [A Rondalla is a Canarian typical music group that mainly uses string instruments].
