Castillo Negro O De San Juan
Built in the 17th-century, Castillo de San Juan was the second most important defensive structure in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Called the “Black Castle” due to its construction in black basalt rock, it now sits in the shadow of the city’s Auditorio de Tenerife. A product of the period, Castillo de San Juan The was built out of the strategic location of Tenerife on the route between the Mediterranean Sea and the so called new world in the Americas. Continual attacks of the Island in the 16th Century gave way to its construction.
