Plaza De España

España Square / Plaza España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the biggest square in the city. It was built in 1929 where the historic castle named San Cristóbal was situated in the past. Such a castle was a bastion whose purpose was that of protecting the island against the piracy. Nowadays there are only some walls which belong to the original building and they are displayed in an underground gallery which is located under the square. España Square / Plaza España, which is 5026 square metres, is dominated by a monument that is called The Fallen / The Dead Monument / El Monumento a los Caídos. It is a tower which is shaped like a cross and there is a lookout at the top of it. At the bottom of The Fallen / The Dead Monument / El Monumento a los Caídos there is a crypt which is currently empty.
The square has been remodelled taking into account the design by the Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. A series of lights which were exclusively designed for this square light España Square / Plaza España. These lights which are shaped like a drop have three different sizes and are held by wire-cables that are placed along some posts. The project in which the remodelling has been based includes the complete remodelling of The Fallen / The Dead Monument / El Monumento a los Caídos as well as an underground gallery which allow people to visit the ruins situated at the bottom of the former castle. Such ruins were found while the works to remodel España Square / Plaza España were being carried out.
